The Moundridge Middle School Wildcat volleyball team is off to a good start this year. After 4 matches, the A-team is 4-0, with their next contest at Peabody this Thursday, October 9th, at 5 p.m. The B and C teams are 3-1 and 2-2 on the year, respectively.
In the first match of the season, the Wildcats took on the Remington Broncos. In that match, the A-team won 25-22, 25-14. The B-team lost 21-25, 13-25. And, the C-team was also downed 13-25, 16-25.
On September 18th, Peabody-Burns came to town to challenge the Junior Lady Wildcats. The A-team had little trouble downing the Warriors 25-12, 25-9. In the B-team match, the score was very similar with the Lady Cats dominating 25-10, 25-12. The C-team struggled a little with serve receiving and was downed 17-25, 6-25.
The start of October saw the Lady Cats on the road for the first time this season. This time, the Canton-Galva Eagles were the next to fall victim to the rolling Cats. It was a clean sweep for the Cats that night. However, the Eagles would not go quietly. In the A-match, the Lady Cats won a hard fought 3 game match; 25-19, 24-26, 15-8. The B-team match saw much of the same intensity, as it took 3 games as well, with the Cats coming out on top; 25-14, 16-25, 15-10. In the final match of the night, the Lady Cat C-team dominated the serving chart and won handily by scores of 25-15 and 25-8.
This past week the Lady Wildcats took on a familiar foe in the Goessel Bluebirds. In a night filled with high emotions, the wildcats once again came out on top. The B-team earned the win with a score of 25-17, 25-7. All the girls really stepped up their serving on the night. The second match of the night saw the 3-0 cats take on the 3-0 bluebirds. After two very strong games, the cats came out victorious with scores of 25-18, 26-24. The C-team girls evened their league record with two more convincing wins. 25-15, 25-6.
The young Lady Wildcats have really accepted the roles set forth for them by their new coaches, Brian Holloway and Molly Budde. Coach Holloway comes to the Moundridge schools to replace retired teacher, Perry Koehn. He is currently teaching 7th and 8th grade boys P.E. as well as K-4 P.E. in the Elementary school. In his previous experience, Coach Holloway taught and coached for 13 years in the Goessel school district. Coach Budde is a new 5th grade teacher in the middle school. She said that she has enjoyed getting to know the girls and working with them in an after-school setting. Coach Holloway commented, “I’m really proud of this bunch of girls for accepting their roles. Some girls play front row, some girls play back row and some girls play all the way around.” He also continued, “It’s a big thing for 7th and 8th grade girls to sacrifice playing time for the betterment of the team. That shows great maturity.”
